The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service in Clayton County is part of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. We are also an educational division of the Department of Community Services of Clayton County Government with funding also provided by the Clayton County Board of Education.

Our purpose is to bring current research and information to the people of Clayton County in the areas of Agriculture/Environment, Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H/Youth Development. Our goal is to help citizens with:

  • Agricultural Competitiveness and Profitability
  • Natural Resources and Environmental Management
  • Improving Nutrition, Diet and Health
  • Family Development and Resource Management
  • Leadership and Volunteer Development
  • Youth at Risk
  • Newsletters
  • Home Maintenance Energy Conservation and Natural Gas Information

Agricultural Competitiveness and Profitability - Classes and printed material are available on lawns, landscaping, insect control, fruit and vegetable production, pesticide application and soil tests, as well as traditional farm production.

Natural Resources and Environmental Management - Information is available on disposing of hazardous household waste, conserving water both inside and outside the home including lawns and gardens.

Improving Nutrition, Diet and Health - What should you eat to stay healthy? Extension educators answer that question by phone, in classes, or at manned exhibits with publications. Topics include nutrition for children, teens, and the elderly, as well as, special needs such as lowering cholesterol, triglycerides, sodium, fat and sugar. Other related topics that affect health are: food preservation, preparation, safety and purchasing.

Family Development and Resource Management - Educational opportunities and resources are available in the areas of basic developmental needs of the total family (from infancy to senior adults); improving family relations; basic parenting skills; and in-service training for care providers; in the areas of child care, personal care homes for seniors, and nursing homes. Resources are available to help individuals and families become better able to manage their finances include: money management series, correspondence courses, classes and limited individual consultations. Home visiting, parenting education and support services are also available.

Leadership and Volunteer Development - Developing leadership skills in Clayton's emerging leaders (both youth and adult) is a priority. Extension works closely with the local adult leadership program: Leadership Clayton - jointly sponsored by Clayton County Chamber of Commerce and Clayton College and State University.

Identifying, nurturing, developing and training emerging leaders to better serve the needs of Clayton County is the mission of the Clayton County Grassroots Leadership Institute. Through a series of classes based on the UGA J. W. Fanning's Leadership Institute curriculum, participants are provided an opportunity to develop team building, leadership and interpersonal skills.

Youth at Risk - Our effort involves young people in many of the listed initiatives. There are opportunities for youth in 5th thru 12th grade. These include working with kids in individual 4-H projects. County and state-wide 4-H events such as rallies, competitions, special interest camps, judging teams, horse club and community service projects are also available. Clayton Leadership Now is a youth leadership development program aimed at developing useful, responsible and productive citizens.

    Includes information on diabetes, nutrition, the diabetic exchange system, recipes and important information.

  • Growing Together - published monthly
    A newsletter for parents of preschool children
  • Senior Sense - published quarterly
    Includes information on upcoming classes, consumer tips and current information from UGA Specialists.
  • Home Maintenance Energy Conservation and Natural Gas Information - Exhibits, educational programs and printed information are available to save money, energy/power and to help protect the environment.
